Senior Design I

Personal Fire Protection System for Downed Firefighters

2013
Wentworth Institute of Technology

The project involved designing and developing a unique apparatus to protect firefighters in an unconscious state from harmful fire conditions. This was achieved by using sensors to monitor the firefighter's state of consciousness, temperature, heart rate, and motion. When an unconscious state is detected, a layer of fire-protecting foam covers the firefighter's body, shielding them from heat and flames.

What was done:

  • Developed a functional prototype of a backpack that disperses protective foam when a firefighter becomes unconscious

  • Created a SolidWorks model and analysis of the backpack

  • Utilized RTD's, accelerometers, and linear actuators to ensure individual sensor functionality under simulated working conditions

  • Manufactured 3D printed and machined parts for the backpack

  • Presented the project at the Polytechnic Summit Conference.
